FAQs

Answers to questions commonly-asked by students can be found here. Need more information on something not listed here? Let me know!

How much do you charge for tutoring?

A price list for services can be found here.

2

Do you offer discounts if I book more sessions with you?

Discounts are not available for tutoring sessions and all prices are non-negotiable.

3

When do I pay?

Payments for both individual 1-hour sessions, as well as for the monthly plans are made at the time of booking, through the online booking tool once you've selected a date and time.. Sessions will not start if payment has not been received during booking.

4

How do I pay?

Payments can be made using either credit cards or PayPal.

5

Which chemistry material will be used during tutoring sessions?

This is up to you to decide, based on your preference. My personal recommendation is for your professor's lecture notes to be used as your assignments, tests, and final exam will be based on lecture material. If you find that your lecture notes are unsuitable for any reason, tailored organic chemistry notes and cheat sheets are available here.

6

What materials do I need for tutoring sessions and for learning organic chemistry?

For tutoring sessions you will need any type of computer or tablet and apps such as Skype or Google Meeting. I highly recommend that students do not attempt to do tutoring sessions using a phone screen as chemistry involves drawing a lot of structures and this cannot be adequately seen on a small phone screen.

I also suggest that you have a pen and a lot of paper available as you will be doing a lot of writing during your studies.

7

How do you do the tutoring sessions?

Typically, students send me their lecture notes after they receive them from the professor. Sessions are carried out over Skype or Google meetings, whatever is agreed on beforehand. Once a session starts, I share my screen, which contains the lecture notes and ChemDraw, used to demonstrate reactions, mechanisms, and diagrams.

If a student chooses not to use the lecture notes provided by their professor, in case they are difficult to understand, my notes on each topic are available here

8

I've booked my first session, what do I need to do to prepare?

We will need to go over your course syllabus to see which topics will specifically be covered in your course. As soon as your course starts you will send me your lecture notes for each section so we can go through them during the sessions.

At the start of the first session feel free to tell me about your learning needs, where your current knowledge of organic chemistry stands, and what parts you especially struggle with.

9

What can I expect from you in terms of tutoring?

My goal as an organic chemistry instructor is to find alternate and simpler ways of explaining chemistry concepts rather than just regurgitating your course notes to you. I can also help you find easier methods of organizing your chemistry course notes so text and exam preparation is more efficient. My teaching style involves pointing patterns out to students and teaching them how to learn rather than having them fully memorize complete courses. You'll be surprised how little memorization is involved once you learn to recognize patterns.

10

What are your expectations of me, as a student?

Overall, I am not entirely a replacement professor for your class and lectures. My goal is to clarify material and approach it in a different manner with you rather than to teach a textbook from start to finish. That's what your university lecture is for. My expectations for students are to put the required work in after the sessions and study the material that we went over during the sessions, by rewriting the notes, among other study methods. The sessions are meant to help you with both understanding the material and learning how to study organic chemistry concepts, but they are not a magic cure for the course so that you don't have to study and put in any more of your own time.

11

What are your policies for rescheduling, showing up late to a session, and cancellations?

Rescheduling: Sessions must be rescheduled 24 hours in advance unless an urgent situation can be proven (illness, family emergencies, etc). If no valid reason or proof is provided, the session is foregone and the fee is non-refundable.

You're late: Out of respect for both of our time, if you are late for a session more than 10 minutes, the session is automatically cancelled and the fee is non-refundable.

I'm late: Out of respect for your time as well, if I am late more than 10 minutes to a session, your session is free of charge.

Cancellations: Any cancellations must be made at least 48 hours in advance to obtain a refund. If a cancellation is made within less than 24 hours, the fee is non-refundable.

12

I booked a monthly plan, can I change my schedule later if I have to?

Schedules for monthly plans may be changed after booking provided that we both agree on a new schedule that works for both of us.

13

I don't see a tutoring or help plan on here that works for me. Do you provide customized tutoring and help packages?

I do. Let me know what you have in mind and I will do my best to accommodate your needs.

14

I can't commit to a regular tutoring schedule. Can you help me with questions and concepts via e-mail or WhatsApp?

Yes, that's possible as well. Let me know what you need and we can work out a schedule and pricing.

15

I have a quick chemistry question but I don't need a full tutoring session. Can you answer it?

Each individual question can be answered via text or e-mail at $30/question, as per my own schedule.

16

I noticed an error/omission on one of the study guides. What can I do about it?

I personally custom-write each document and errors and omissions are possible. If you see an error or omission, let me know and I will send you the corrected, updated document, free of charge.
